Ian Anderson, our principal surveyor served 16 years at sea as an Engineering Officer with P&O gaining a First Class Chief Engineer’s Qualifications for Steam and Motor ships. He has experience of maintenance and repairs at all levels from Hull and Main Engines to Air Conditioning systems and Hotel items such as Passenger Cabins and facilities. On his promotion to Superintendent, he came ashore to manage a pair of Cruise ships for a year before transferring within P&O into the Ferry Division. There he provided technical management for ten years to a group of ferries operating on the North Sea . A change of career then followed when he joined the RNLI as Divisional Engineer. There, for six years, he worked with full time staff and volunteers engaged in looking after a fleet of Lifeboats (around 70) ensuring that the operation and maintenance was up to the required standards and achieving proper value for (charity) money. He investigated incidents, surveyed damages and agreed repairs. He attended Pre-Refit surveys to agree work content for refits and modifications. He was involved with the inspection and operational trials of the boats and equipment prior to them being adopted back into the operational fleet. Alongside the day to day operations, he undertook courses reinforcing his experience resulting in a Diploma in Marine Survey issued by North Kent University, A NEBOSH certificate in Health and Safety Management, and a number of other certificates and qualifications as noted elsewhere. He retains membership of the IMarEST where, over the last 33 years, He has maintained his knowledge as up to date as possible through the Continuous Professional Development Scheme. This autumn, he completed a YDSA backed, residential, Small Craft Surveyors Course at the International Boatbuilding Training College. On completion of the course, a “Pass with Distinction” was awarded. A subsequent application to join the YDSA as a Surveyor Affiliate Member has been accepted and now with Full Professional Indemnity Insurance, is seeking appointments to provide surveys to small craft both in and out of the UK.
